      2. The politics of design: the liberating potential of communication design in post/modern times – Towards a critical methodology in communication design

This project aims at an integral history of mentalities in communication design that will provide insight into (the backgrounds of) the differences in (visual) language. These differences range from reduced, limited forms of communication where the message is seen as an object, to complex, enriched forms of communication, where the message is seen as an ‘event’. That is to say: the message perceived as a static, consumerist versus a dynamic, activating ‘operation’. The research starts from the question: What is the relationship between discourse (mentality), social conditions and forms (of expression) of communication design: how and under what conditions can communication design develop operational strategies that empower the onlooker by encouraging the formation of independent opinion?

      1. Biography

      2. Els Kuijpers (1958, NL) sees design (like writing) as cultural (i.e. value) production, an interest that stems from the assumption that (visual and textual) language constructs meaning in dynamic, social processes; its structure and form being part of the argument. Kuijpers was head of the research centre and editor of academic publications at the Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht (NL). She has lectured at several art and design schools in the Netherlands and abroad, and has, among others, curated exhibitions for Kunsthal Rotterdam and Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven. Currently she teaches (theory, discourse, history of) visual culture and design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, and co-conducts Ba and Ma workshops on editorial design together with Jan van Toorn – recently for LCC London (UK), HfG Karlsruhe (DE), PXL MAD Hasselt (BE). She writes regularly for design magazines and weeklies and is author of Ootje Oxenaar: Designer and Commissioner (2011); And/Or Extended (2013); Strategies in Communication Design (2015).
